Wind Power Brewing up a Growth Storm. Potentially Meeting World's Electricity Needs 18 Times Over

That's right, 18 times over! How? Bigger turbines, floating, lowering cost of technology as well as installation, and supportive government green policies, are all key for wind to take the energy world by storm. At the moment wind power just accounts for a mere 0.3% of the world's energy. However, a major industry report by the International Energy Agency (IEA) has claimed wind has the potential to provide sufficient clean electricity for everyone on Earth 18 times over. Fall

Net Zero emissions only achievable for UK with increased network flexibility and mini power stations

In parliament last week, it was stated that the UK will need 20 million mini power stations to be able to achieve its energy goal of net zero emissions by 2050. As well as outlining that it is paramount that creating policy framework for technologies such as, battery energy storage and solar power, is made a priority. The UK needing 20 million mini power stations, came from Dr Andrew Crossland, an engineer with the MCS’ Battery Installation Standard division. Who also explain

Fossil fuels to generate under half of the UK's yearly power for the first time

The National Grid has confidently predicted that in 2019 the UK will produce more power from zero-carbon energy sources, than will come from fossil fuels. This prediction comes just 6 months into the year, and will the first time this has happened in the UK since the industrial revolution. This has largely come from the UK's move away and ability to not rely on coal for the majority of its power production, coupled with the increasing investment and growth into clean renewabl

Another Coal Free Record! UK coal free energy now officially a trend?

At 3:12pm Friday afternoon (31st of May) the National Grid ESO confirmed that the UK had surpassed a record two weeks without using any coal powered energy generation. This makes it the third time in under two months that the coal-free record has been beaten. The first being over Easter weekend in April, at a total of 90 hours 45 minutes, beating the previous record of 76 hours. The second was earlier in May, lasting for one full week, at 168 hours without coal. Now this new

UK's coal-free Easter weekend goes down in the record books

The UK went for a massive 90 hours of completely coal-free energy generation over the Easter weekend. The coal-free period started from Thursday night, continuing all the way to Monday Evening, ending in a total run of 90 hours 45 minutes. Demolishing the previous record of 76 hours, which was set at almost the same time the year before. The four day Bank Holiday weekend with fantastic weather and sunshine, no doubt helping the UK go coal-free, with much of the population hea

Suspended Capacity Market Auction Soon to be Approved to Run?

The T-1 Capacity Market auction, which was originally meant to take place in January this year, will go ahead “as soon as reasonably practicable”, says Greg Clark, Energy secretary, in a letter to the National Grid. The suspension came after the General Court of the Court of Justice of the European Union found in favour of Tempus Energy, against the European Commission, annulling the Commission’s State aid approval for the UK Capacity Market. The T-1 auction is created to hel

UK renewable energy growth in line with Global average

Data from, Renewable Capacity Statistics 2019, released by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), shows renewable energy capacity continues to see strong growth on a global scale, primarily through increases in Wind and Solar. The UK's growth level was almost the same percentage as the worlds, with the global growth at 7.9% and the UK at 7.8%, during 2018. Unseasonably Good Weather Causing Negative UK Power Market Pricing

For more than 6 hours last Sunday, the UK wholesale power prices dipped into negative pricing. The UK's energy price fell to -£50/MWh from the settlement period 21 (10:00 - 10:30am) and remained negative all the way until 4:30pm. Unseasonably sunny and warm weather causing the unexpected change in usual supply and demand levels. The sun delivering a higher than normal solar power output, peaking at 7.7GW, more than double the seasonal average of 3.5GW. While the public went o

    Suspension of the Capacity Market

The capacity market payments have recently been suspended. After the General Court of the Court of Justice of the European Union found in favour of Tempus Energy, against the European Commission, annulling the Commission’s State aid approval for the UK Capacity Market. Meaning a main service used to help deal with stresses on the network, power shortages and surges has effectively been stopped. This of course adds uncertainty to the power grid's reliability. The capacity mark

100% renewable energy? Is this attainable

Can we run off purely renewable energy? It just so happens that some countries already are. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Iceland, Paraguay and Albania are currently using 100% renewable power. With others very close, such as Costa Rica at 99% and Norway at 97%. So can and should every other country follow suit? Or feel inferior for being so far behind? Well, if you dive into what makes up these countries renewable energy sources, it turns out that
